CJ Sheeran Group’s €6m investment in a new Mountrath facility highlights how manufacturing expansion can increase the demands placed on industrial facilities management.

The timber pallet manufacturer has opened a 50,000 sq ft logistics and storage facility capable of holding 150,000 pallets. The site will provide customer storage while supporting the company’s expansion into third-party logistics.

CJ Sheeran Group is an Irish timber packaging manufacturer headquartered in Mountrath, Co Laois. Its operations span pallet manufacturing, timber processing, logistics and related services.

The new facility forms part of a wider investment programme that includes an automated pallet production line capable of producing more than 10,000 pallets per week, a 1.75MW biomass boiler and two high-capacity kilns.

For facilities management teams, the development creates a more complex operating environment where production equipment, storage, energy infrastructure and logistics systems need to function together.

The kiln infrastructure is particularly significant. Each of the two new kilns can dry more than 10,000 pallets per week, with two further kilns planned. Managing heating, drying and production equipment at this scale increases the importance of preventative maintenance, asset monitoring and reliable energy systems.

The investment also demonstrates the growing connection between FM and manufacturing automation. As production becomes more automated, maintaining equipment availability and ensuring buildings and supporting infrastructure can accommodate new technology become important to operational continuity.

The expansion has also increased the workforce. Laois Today reported that 15 new jobs have been created, bringing CJ Sheeran Group’s direct workforce to 465, with further opportunities expected across manufacturing, engineering, logistics, maintenance and support functions.

The facility’s location adds another operational consideration. Laois Nationalist reported that the site has access to major national road networks, supporting the movement of pallets and packaging between the facility and customers.

There is also a sustainability dimension. CJ Sheeran Group operates a circular pallet model in which timber pallets can be reused, repaired and remanufactured, while the biomass boiler forms part of the site’s energy infrastructure.

For FM providers, the development illustrates how industrial expansion can create requirements across maintenance, engineering, energy management, safety and asset planning at the same time. Managing these systems as one connected environment will become increasingly important as the site expands.

For the sector, the lesson is clear: industrial growth creates FM requirements that extend beyond buildings and floor space. As manufacturing becomes more automated and interconnected, facilities management will be increasingly important to asset reliability, energy efficiency, safety and operational continuity.
