A new recycling facility in Northern Ireland is set to support more efficient waste operations and strengthen resource recovery capability, reflecting growing investment in infrastructure that enables more sustainable facilities and environmental services delivery.

McKinstry Group has completed a new £16 million construction, demolition and industrial (CD&I) waste recycling facility in County Antrim following design, manufacturing and installation work delivered by Kiverco.

The facility has been developed to increase processing capacity and improve the management of mixed waste streams through enhanced separation and recovery processes.

Rather than focusing solely on throughput, the investment reflects a broader shift across waste and facilities operations toward greater visibility, operational control and improved material outcomes. As organisations continue to face pressure to improve environmental performance and reduce landfill dependency, advanced recovery infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important part of long-term operational planning.

The new plant incorporates screening and separation systems designed to improve sorting accuracy and support higher recovery rates across multiple material streams. Among the technologies installed is a 3D trommel system intended to improve separation efficiency and increase the proportion of recyclable materials recovered during processing.

Digital monitoring capability has also been integrated across the operation, allowing real-time oversight of plant performance and supporting more responsive operational decision-making.

According to the companies involved, the facility has been configured around McKinstry Group’s operational requirements with a focus on improving material flow and creating flexibility as waste composition and processing demands continue to evolve.

For facilities management and environmental services teams, developments such as this highlight the increasing role of technology-enabled waste operations in supporting sustainability targets, improving resource efficiency and strengthening circular economy outcomes.

As investment in waste infrastructure continues, organisations are placing greater emphasis on systems that combine operational performance with long-term environmental resilience.
