Leonard's planned investment in robotics and industrial infrastructure highlights how technology is changing the management and maintenance of complex industrial facilities.
The Cookstown-based specialist has rebranded from G. Leonard to Leonard as it enters a growth phase focused on industrial maintenance, productivity and technology development. The company plans investment in a new Northern Ireland headquarters and manufacturing facility while expanding its presence in North America.
The development includes Leonard's Descender robotic demolition and installation arms, designed for demanding industrial environments where refractory-lined, high-temperature and confined-space assets require specialist maintenance during plant shutdowns.
For facilities management teams, the significance lies in the pressure surrounding shutdown periods. Planned maintenance often brings multiple specialist teams into tightly defined operational windows, where delays can affect production continuity and increase costs.
Leonard's confined-space robotic demolition technology is designed to reduce the need for manual access while supporting more controlled maintenance. The company says its robotic systems can improve productivity and safety on the critical path during shutdown operations.
The technology has already been applied at industrial sites including CRH's Irish Cement Platin facility, alongside projects in waste-to-energy and metals. Reducing the time required for specific maintenance activities could help operators limit production interruptions and improve shutdown planning.
Leonard is also working with Ulster University and Innovate UK Business Connect to develop semi-autonomous capabilities and increase operational data capture. This aligns with the wider work of Ulster University's Centre for Industrial Digitalisation, Robotics and Automation, which focuses on applying robotics and digital technologies across manufacturing and industry.
For FM providers, the development illustrates how specialist automation is becoming part of wider asset-management strategy. Robotics and operational data can support maintenance planning, condition monitoring and safer management of technically complex facilities.
