ABM has renewed its cleaning services agreement with Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE) to continue delivering cleaning and hygiene services across University Hospital Waterford (UHW), extending a long-standing facilities management partnership within the healthcare sector.
Under the renewed arrangement, ABM will maintain a workforce of 265 cleaning personnel supporting operations across five hospital facilities in Waterford. The contract includes cleaning provision across both clinical and non-clinical environments, including operating theatres, intensive care units and the hospital’s Haematology and Oncology Day Unit.
ABM has been providing services at University Hospital Waterford since 2019 following its original appointment to support enhanced cleaning standards across the site. While financial terms and contract duration have not been disclosed, the continuation of the agreement reflects the ongoing importance of specialist support services in maintaining healthcare environments.
Hospital cleaning forms a critical component of facilities management within healthcare settings, where operational continuity depends on maintaining compliance, infection prevention standards and service readiness across highly occupied facilities. Effective environmental hygiene can also support patient flow and contribute to efficient use of clinical space, particularly where hospitals operate extended schedules and additional outpatient activity.
As part of the existing contract, ABM established an on-site training facility for cleaning operatives, which the company states was the first dedicated hospital-based training centre of its kind in Ireland. The facility continues to support workforce development and onboarding for teams delivering services at the hospital.
The renewal also reflects broader trends across healthcare facilities management, where providers are increasingly expected to combine workforce capability, compliance standards and operational resilience while supporting evolving service demands.
For facilities professionals, the agreement highlights how outsourced services continue to play an important role in supporting healthcare delivery, maintaining operational standards and enabling hospitals to manage increasingly complex environments.
