Kimpton Ltd has secured a planned preventative maintenance (PPM) contract to manage heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems at Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot, Merseyside.

The appointment reinforces the increasing importance of specialist facilities management services in maintaining complex public venues where environmental performance, visitor experience and asset preservation must operate together.

Under the agreement, Kimpton will maintain HVAC infrastructure across the theatre and wider estate, supporting performance areas, exhibition spaces and public facilities. While the value and duration of the contract have not been disclosed, the project adds to the company’s preventative maintenance portfolio across the North West.

Shakespeare North Playhouse opened in 2022 and occupies the site associated with what is recognised as the only purpose-built Elizabethan playhouse outside London during Shakespeare’s lifetime. The modern venue combines heritage-inspired design with contemporary operational requirements and includes the 470-seat Cockpit-in-Court theatre, studio spaces, galleries and external performance areas.

Environmental management is expected to form a significant part of the maintenance programme. The theatre’s timber-framed structure requires carefully controlled conditions to help preserve reclaimed hardwood materials and maintain building performance over time.

Preventative maintenance of HVAC systems plays an increasingly strategic role in facilities management by reducing operational disruption, improving energy performance and extending the life of critical building assets. In specialist cultural environments, maintaining stable internal conditions is also essential to preserving infrastructure and supporting visitor comfort.

The wider venue relies on integrated mechanical and electrical systems to deliver heating, cooling and ventilation across multiple space types with varying occupancy demands.

Kimpton said support for the contract will be delivered through engineers located across the Liverpool City Region and complemented by its emergency response capabilities for maintenance clients.

Commenting on the appointment, Andy Morgan, who leads Kimpton’s PPM team, said the company was proud to support one of the region’s most significant cultural venues and recognised the importance of maintaining performance standards in such a distinctive environment.

The contract reflects continued investment in preventative maintenance as organisations seek to strengthen building resilience and optimise long-term operational outcomes.
